The hits were at a premium in the Penguins victory over the Rangers last night in New York. Early on in the video, Ryan Callahan takes a penalty behind the play. Replays later show Callahan and Sidney Crosby get tangled while skating stride for stride toward the Rangers zone. Callahan gets his hand up high and takes a penalty for it. But watch a few strides after Callahan’s “penalty” and you’ll see Crosby blatantly slew foot Callahan and send him to the ice.

Now correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t the slew foot a play the NHL is trying to eliminate altogether?  I have never been the type to accuse the refs of playing favorites, but as is the norm in sports, the superstars always seem to get away with things like this. But make your own opinion. The replay begins at about the :37 second mark.

In the post game press conference, Crosby adamantly defended himself against the accusations of being a dirty player. “How many penalty minutes do I have this year, if I’m that dirty?,” asked Crosby. “I mean, please. Show me all those dirty plays [I’ve commited].”

Although the fans of 29 teams in the league love to find ways to hate Crosby, there is a more impressive play in this 6 minute clip – The hit Marc Staal lays on Kris Letang at the 1:25 mark. It’s no secret to hockey fans that Marc Staal is quickly becoming one of the most impressive shut-down defensemen in the league. This hit certainly adds to his ever growing resume of awesome hits, just ask Matt Stajan.

Another interesting clip in the video is at the 4:55 mark as Sid the Kid yanks Sean Avery down in front of the Rangers bench. This came just a few plays after Sean Avery had laid a solid hit on Crosby.
